Doosan Vina’s Water Business Unit has completed the engineering, fabrication and shipment of 350 tons of high tech components to a desalination plant under construction in Saudia Arabia. The two Ras Al Khair projects recieved steel piping and flash tanks essential in the desalination process.
Ras Al Khair is the world's largest desalination project and is being built by Doosan. It entails the design and manufacture of eight massive desalination units, each of which is the size of a football pitch. Three of the units are being built at the Doosan Heavy Industries Vietnam complex in Quang Ngai with the other five being built at Doosan’s Korean base. Where fully operational the eight units will supply 728 million liters of water per day.
This latest shipment included the intake piping that will be used to draw the sea water from the ocean and supply the desalination plant with the raw salt water which will be desalinated and turned into fresh potable water.
This fifth shipment by Doosan Vina to Ras Al Khair consisted of 631 sections of steel pipe that weighed over 300 tons and were as large as 2.1 meters in diameter. The remainder of the shipment was made up of four flash tanks that weighed nearly 50 tons.
"The Ras Al Khair Piping contract is to provide 1,753 sections of pipe weighing nearly 2,000 tons. After fabrication at Doosan Vina the pipes will be sent to the construction site in Saudi Arabia for connection and assembly, they will supply the seawater to the desalination equipment and provide fresh water for millions of people in Saudi Arabia," said Tran Quoc Hieu, of Water’s project management office.
The “Flash Tank” portion of the project is to supply eight tanks that will weigh 69 tons. The flash tank role is to provide critical cooling for the system and because of the extremes they operate under they must be made of special carbon steel that is 18 millimeters thick and engineered to be able to withstand high pressure.
“The Water team at Doosan Vina has done remarkably well under difficult circumstances, I am very proud to have a team of skillful men and women that no matter how difficult things get we can stand tall and go forward”, said Mr. Hwang Hyeon Sang, the Water Business Unit Director.
