Third Dream Home Completed

27.APR.2015

Shelter is one of mankind’s basic needs and without it life can be very miserable.  That is a fact that Truong Quang Tri was all too familiar with. His family’s Son Tinh area home was in serious need of repair and his elderly mother was struggling financially, barely meeting the family’s basic needs, so they certainly didn’t have the funds to carry out the extensive repairs that were becoming more urgent with each passing month. Recognizing 28-year-old Tri’s desperate situation; his coworkers, the Dung Quat Economic Zone (DQEZ) Trade Union and Doosan Vina, his employer, mobilized and came to his rescue.

Under the auspices of the “Dream Home” program supported by Doosan Vina and the DQEZ Trade Union, fifty coworkers volunteered to provide the labor and Doosan Vina and the DQEZ Trade Union supplied the money to buy the building materials that were required to carry out the desperately needed renovations on the home.

Hang Ha Ryu, CEO and General Director of Doosan Vina said, the “Dream Home” program is an example of “the Doosan Way,” we help each other, we look out for each other, and we care about our staff and the community. In addition to helping employees with their housing needs, the Dream Home project is also currently working on ten homes of the elderly in the area around the company to renovate their homes. Over the months and years ahead we will continue to select people whose homes are in urgent need of repair and fix them for them, over time the Dream Home program will have a great impact on the community!

Chairman of the Dung Quat Economic Zone (DQEZ) Trade Union, Tran Quang, said, “A union by definition means together and as a union we come together to help each other in many ways and seeing that our members have adequate shelter is certainly a priority of mine and the DQEZ Trade Union.”

At the handover ceremony Truong Quang Tri said, “I feel like a great burden has been lifted from my shoulders, it’s a comfort to know that my family has a proper home that can protect us from the weather, I am very grateful to Doosan Vina and the Dung Quat Economic Zone Trade Union for their generous support. The house and furniture are great, thanks to everyone who helped in this project.”

This is the third such “Dream Home” since the program began and on April 27th the completely renovated and enlarged home was handed over to Tri and his family. The project took the 50 volunteers 40 days to complete, and the home now features an additional 30 square meters that include two new bedrooms, a living room and a kitchen.  Another group of volunteers in Doosan Vina’s Packing & Shipping department also wanted to help and came up with the idea to make five pieces of furniture for the family using recycled wood from packing material.

In addition, the above handcrafted furniture, Doosan Vina’s management presented the family with a new LG television, an electric fan, a stainless-steel table, an electric cooker and many other items that the family was in need of.

Because of all volunteer labor the renovation was able to be done for only 60 million VND or nearly $3,000, which was provided by the generous support of Doosan Vina and the Trade Union of the Dung Quat Economic Zone. Since starting the program in 2014, the Dream Home program has renovated three homes for a total of 160 million VND or approximately $8,000.  Because of the success and enthusiasm of the volunteers to do more, the Dream Home team recently expanded its efforts and is currently working on renovating ten homes of elderly in the area which are scheduled for completion in May 2015.
